US 5 POUND KETCHUM HAND GRENADE RECOVERED FROM PORT HUDSON, LA

$595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R21813

Recovered grenade shows heavy surface rust and pitting. It has been coated in shellac, but this has chipped off in some places.  Detonation plunger is intact; paper tail is missing.

Although the Union ordnance department held high hopes for the Ketchum grenade, the device proved largely ineffective, for the reason that it had to land directly on its nose to explode, which it seldom did. Confederates encountered this grenade during the siege of Port Hudson, LA, where this one was found, and took to putting out blankets to catch them, to throw back into Union lines.
