This 3 inch Read shell was recovered in the Atlanta area during construction of Highway 75. A Confederate ammo dump was uncovered that produced several of these unfinished Read shells along with 18/24 pound projectiles, some in the original Selma Arsenal shipping crates.
This Read has a very thick copper sabot with a yellow/reddish color brass. Has two thick and raised bourrelets typical of Atlanta/Macon Arsenal. Small diameter fuse hole (~0.7”) for wood fuse plug, with very minor chipping along edge of the hole. Light pitting to body. Comes with a note on the back of a Civil War dealer’s business card: “Dug at site of Atlanta Arsenal – 45’ deep in well” and dated 1988. Seldom seen on today’s market.
