Loosely lodged in a large section of wood fence post is a fired, Federal .58 caliber three-ring, lead minie ball recovered from the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg, VA sometime after the Battle. Accompanying the bullet-in-wood artifact is a handwritten note on a section of pasteboard in black ink that partially reads “…from the wall where the ________ / General Cobb was kill____/ Sunken Road ______ / Fredericksburg”.
The fired projectile buried itself deeply into a section of wood post and remains lodged there until the post was split open. The wood section resembles a tent-shaped device with the bullet resting on top of the tent seam. Wood measures 5½” long x 3½” wide x 2” high and wears a mellow light brown patina overall. In very good condition, the wood is still strong, tight and weathered over with age. Exhibits no original bark surface.
The remains of the hard pasteboard note had been attached to the wood with period, very thin wire which is at two corners of the section of wood. This lead minie ball, embedded in a section of wood post from the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg Battlefield, is a classic artifact of the Civil War.
