Excavated Parrott artillery shell. Parrott patented this projectile's sabot construction on August 20, 1861, patent #33,099. The high brass sabot ring was cast around the base of the projectile. Remains of zinc fuse in nose, iron body is heavily rusted and pitted.  This is believed to be a case shot filled shell due to its weight, which is about 11 ½ pounds. Drilled through the bottom to deactivate.  Recovered near Petersburg, VA.  [jet]
