Threadless clay telegraph insulator was recovered from the Richmond area. This item has been repaired at the base.
Primarily, threadless glass insulators were the insulator of choice during the Civil War, but this clay “egg” type were common in the South. Threaded insulators were not patented until July 1865, after the war. [sm]
