US PATTERN 1839 BELT PLATE DUG BY SID KIRKSIS - CEDAR CREEK

$375.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R22748

This Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from Cedar Creek in September 1958. Plate is in very good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a bold “US”.  Face is very good condition and the surface has acquired a handsome dark brown patina. Lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill. No maker’s markings. Of the “puppy paw” hook style, this plate retains all three of its hooks which remain very strong and tight.

Recovered by Sid Kirksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “Cedar Creek / Sep 58 / US B P / 19th AC.”  Mr. Sydney C. Kirksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.

This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. enlistedman’s belt plate would be a fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection.   [jet]
