Excavated barrel from a Model 1863 rifle musket recovered at Appomattox. Barrel only. Bolster with remains of percussion nipple at breech end and sight at the muzzle end…rear sight missing. Breech plug shows evidence of being hammered down; all the first person accounts of the after-surrender campsite say some Confederate soldiers hammered their gun barrels into the ground, so the Yankees couldn't use them against Joe Johnston's army in North Carolina, which did not surrrender at Appomattox. Rusted and in relic condition but has been cleaned, coated and is well preserved. Interesting relic from the last days of the Civil War. [jet]
Due to the length and weight of this item, it requires shipment in one of our sword/carbine boxes.
