This relic is a complete Model 1861 rifle musket pulled up from the James River. The weapon has all its wood which has shrunk some from years in the water. This has also caused the lines of the wood grain to become more pronounced. The stock, which was broken in two, has been expertly repaired. There is a repaired split at the wrist and two or three surface cracks in the area of the lock.

The iron parts are rusted throughout but all heavy rust has been removed allowing the details of the iron to be seen. Everything is here, the lockplate, buttplate, front and rear sights, all three barrel bands, proper swelled ramrod and even both sling swivels. The only visible iron piece missing is half of the middle band spring.

The weapon is attached to a painted white board that meas. approx. 59.75 x 9.00 inches. It is held in place by six black zip-ties that blend in wonderfully with the dark surfaces of the item.

Attached to the board is a brass plaque that reads “MODEL 1862 ENFIELD RIFLED MUSKET .577 CAL.” Of course this inscription is incorrect and a new plaque can easily be added.  [ad]
