This relic is the forward section of a Model 1861 Springfield musket. The weapon was damaged either in battle or on purpose to make it unserviceable.
The barrel is bent but complete with both sights, bolster and nipple. All three barrel bands are present as well as the sling swivel on the center band. Swivel is bent. Lower band retains its spring.
At the time the barrel was damaged the stock also shattered but a good bit of it remains. The wood that is present runs from the rear sight to just behind where the nose cap would be.
The ramrod is still present in the channel of the stock but it is missing the head.
All iron surfaces are rusted but a barrel date of “1863” is visible, as well as “V/P/Eagle”.
Relic was recovered in central Virginia. [ad]
