Here is offered three large remnants of uniforms and blanket as well as a pair of brogans all recovered from temporary burial sites at Cold Harbor, Virginia.  The graves were long empty, as soldier’s remains were removed to cemeteries after the war, but these uniform parts were left behind. Anyone who has seen the photos of the burial parties handling the skeletal bodies at Cold Harbor can quickly associate these items to that horrific event.

First piece is now dark blue/black/tan but was most likely a panel of a regulation blue uniform coat as there are turned edges on all sides as well as a curved edge for neck or arm. This piece is surprisingly complete but does have several tears and holes.  Measures approximately 25 ½” x 9”.

Next piece is now a green/brown color but was most likely a portion of a blue sack coat.  It has a rolled edge on two sides and is a coarser weave that looks very much like those found on the four-button sack coats. This measures about 17” x 14” but has a big hole in the center.

The last section of cloth is of a very course weave so is most likely a portion of blanket. This remnant is an irregular shape but is approximately 15” x 10”.  A rectangular brass object was once buried with this and has stained the fabric. All pieces of cloth are very stable and solid despite being buried in the ground for so many years.

Lastly, a pair of leather brogans goes with the group. Mostly complete these two shoes do show some holes and cracks and heavy wear to the soles as would be expected from shoes that marched many miles while campaigning. Leather is stiff and has been coated with a preservative.
