Box was made of wood from the “Pemberton Oak” in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Box is made to look like a book and is stained dark brown. Hand inscription on box reads, “MADE FROM THE OAK TREE UNDER WHICH GEN. U.S. GRANT, U.S.A. AND LT. GEN. J.C. PEMBERTON ARRANGED THE SURRENDER OF VICKSBURG. JULY 3, 1863”.
Box measures 3 ¼” by 4 ½” by 1”. Shows light wear all over and is cracked at the end. [sl]
