A nice excavated coat size button with clear “Virginia” and “Sic Semper Tyrannis” state motto around the perimeter. The central figures of Virtue and Tyranny are distinct, though lacking detail, but show traces of gilt in recesses. Back and shank are in place. The backmark is “Horstmann & Allien / NY” with rays around the base of the shank. This was recovered at Clark’s Mountain, a key Confederate point of observation in central Virginia. [sr]
