This VMI cadet button was recovered at Clark’s Mountain in central Virginia. The face has no pushes and clearly shows “CADET” at the top and V.M.I. at the bottom, the state seal figure of Virtue triumphant over Tyranny, with the state motto, “sic semper tyrannis” in an arc on either side, all on a lined background. The button preserves a lot of its gilt in the recesses of the lines and the figures and lettering are well defined. The back and shank are intact and the button is backmarked by D. Evans & Co. of Attleboro. Regarded as the “West Point of the South, V.M.I. alumni supplied many, many officers to the Confederacy. Clark’s Mountain is a prominent landmark and was an important observation point during the war. [sr]
