Item Code: 1000-2250

This three-piece coat size Virginia button has substantial gilt left on the face and good detailing of the figures of the Virginia state seal and the motto on a ribbon on a lined background with an arc of stars. This was intended for Virginia staff officers. The shank and back are in place, though the shank is bent. The back is marked,  "HORSTMANN BROS & Co (o is superscript and underlined) / (dot) PHILA (A is superscript and underlined) (dot.)" Horstmann Brothers used this backmark 1875 to 1893. This came to us in a collection of buttons excavated in central Virginia.   [sr]
