This is the nose section of a 3-inch Hotchkiss shell that has the complete base but half the nose. When the shell detonated almost exactly one half of the conical nose blew off.
Shell has been cleaned of rust and has been shellacked. Painted on the front is “BENTONVILLE N. (C.) 1865 NOV. 1990.” The letter “C” has chipped off.
Surface has moderate pitting.
An interesting fragment from one of the last battles of the war. [ad]
