This is a “dug” artillery shell fired from 3” rifled cannons. This is the tall, smooth sided Read pattern shell. Topped with the typical Confederate copper fuse adaptor featuring a central fuse hole and two small spanner wrench holes. Shell has a complete iron sabot and the typical CS lathe dimple on the base.
The iron body is pitted and the whole piece has been coated.
A nicely hand painted identification is on the side of the shell. Painted by legendary collector Mac Mason, author of “Civil War Projectiles”. Many relics exhibit his carefully hand written identifications and often bring a premium. Some scattered pitting occurred after he painted this shell causing some minor loss of his white paint. Shell remains solid and is still a very fine representation of Mac Mason’s touch.
Recovered around Petersburg in October of 1966. [jet]
