This is a “dug” artillery shell fired from 3” rifled cannons. This is the tall, smooth sided Read pattern shell. Topped with the typical Confederate copper fuse adaptor featuring a central fuse hole and two small spanner wrench holes. Leather washer remains and the fuse can still be unscrewed. Shell has a complete iron sabot and the typical CS lathe dimple on the base.
The iron body is very clean and has only light surface pitting.
A piece of tape with identification is on the side of the shell. Identification appears to in the hand of legendary collector Mac Mason, author of “Civil War Projectiles”. Many relics exhibit his carefully hand written identifications and often bring a premium. This is not his typical “white paint” label but rather a piece from much later in his collecting life.
Recovered around Cold Harbor in February 1978. [jet]
