This seldom seen artifact is a fine condition dug example of a two-piece CS army Corps of Engineers button as worn on the uniforms of Confederate officers. Regulations for the CS Army adopted in 1861 prescribed that officers of the Corps of Engineers wear buttons the same as the General Staff, except that in place of the eagle and stars, there will be a raised “E” in German text. The brass, coat-size button is of two-piece construction with a border. The convex button retains no gold gilt on the face. Button is very good with no pushes on the face and is classed as a CSE215As in Warren Tice’s reference volume. The circular, 25-mm, 2-piece brass button exhibits a single letter “E” completed in lined manuscript old English form displayed on a plain, unlined field. Back side excellent with shank strong. Has a distinct backmark of “ W. DOWLER / SUPERIOR”. This original Confederate Corps of Engineers script “E” button is a fine dug specimen. It makes an outstanding addition to any Civil War button display or Confederate-focused collection.
