This rare excavated artifact is an fine example of a general use, convex, two-piece, unbordered Confederate brass button as worn on the uniforms of Louisiana militia troops. Button exhibits the Louisiana State Seal that shows the standing Pelican with its head to its right on a plain field. Button face retains much of the original gold gilt on or near the pelican. Backside and edges are oxidized with rust. Button has no pushes or dents. Classed as a LA210A2 in Warren Tice’s reference volume. The face of the circular, convex, 20.5mm, brass device exhibits the pelican feeding her young while the backside is rmdc with “HYDE & GOODRICH. / N. O.” Retains its strong, tight shank that is slightly bent. This Louisiana button is hard to find and would make a wonderful addition to any Civil War display or to a Louisiana focused collection.
