This artifact is a good and complete excavated example of a Confederate Infantryman’s Block “I” brass button as worn on a Southern enlisted man’s uniform. Found at an unknown location sometime after the war, this convex coat-size infantry button appears to be locally made. Construction is of one-piece cast with an edge border. Classed as a CSI240A in Warren Tice’s reference volume, this circular, 23-mm, brass specimen exhibits a plain Roman block letter “I” displayed upon the face that has a smooth background. Never cleaned, the button shows no maker’s mark as the backside is heavily rusted. But the original shank is strong and intact. Here is an original, excavated Confederate uniform block “I” button from the Civil War that would fit nicely in any Civil War collection.

Material related to Civil War military Chaplains is extremely hard to find. This is a commercially produced “officer’s style” haversack with a great stencil in white on the reverse indicating its owner was the “Chaplain / 15th Regt’ / Vt.… (2025-1851). Learn More »
