This artifact is a fine condition, excavated example of a convex two-piece CS cavalry script button as worn on the uniforms of Confederate horse soldiers. The handsome, brass, coat-size button is of two-piece construction with a border and retains none of its original gold gilt. Dug button is excellent and is classed as a CS215A1 in Warren K. Tice’s reference volume. The circular, 23-mm, 2-piece brass button exhibits a single letter, manuscript, lined “C” executed in old English form and displayed on a plain field. Back side retains a strong and tight shank. Maker’s backmark has some oxidation but “S. ISAACS CAMPBELL” is easily visible while the rest of the backmark is not. This original Confederate cavalry script “C” button is an excellent dug specimen and would make a fine addition to any Civil War button display or Confederate-focused collection.
