This piece is from the well known collection of the late John Henry Kurtz. Standard issue US cartridge box plate that has been struck just below dead center by a bullet that is still lodged in the plate. The plate has a slight bend inwards toward the impact site of the bullet. The area struck is the bottom inside arm of the letter “U” and the bottom serif of the letter “S.” The face of the plate has a dark patina except for the edges where it has been handled over the years. There is an area along the edge near the top of the letter “U” that is slightly curled. The bullet that is still lodged in the plate appears to be a .58 minie.
The piece comes expertly mounted in a walnut frame with gold border. The inside mat is made of old purple cloth with a twisted gold border surrounding the plate. There is also a nicely done plaque that reads “STRUCK CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE-CHICKAMAUGA.” The frame and were made recently using old materials. The nameplate is also new. It is all tastefully done.
