The relic Model 1860 Spencer carbine was lost in the fighting at Howell’s Mill in Georgia during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. The fighting at Howell’s Mill occurred on July 19, 1864 during the Atlanta campaign in the Peach Tree Creek area when Union General Jefferson Davis attempted to cross the stream with Federal forces. Recovered some time after the war, the relic carbine has lost all its wood including both the stock and forend and the loading tube. It does retain the receiver, hammer, operating lever, triggerguard tang, barrel, sling bar and sling ring with both the folding rear sight with the sliding “V” notch elevation bar, and the blade front sight. All gunmetal has a layer of rust that is hard and smooth with no flaking. This Civil War Model 1860 Sharps carbine is representative relic used by the Federal cavalry.
