US 3 IN GROUND BURST SCHENKL SHELL FROM ANTIETAM

$250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 457-27

This is an almost complete 3 inch US Schenkl shell that buried itself in the ground before it exploded hence the term “ground burst.” The good thing about a ground burst is that most of the shell is still present when found by the digger. This shell consists of 17 iron body pieces of various sizes, 20 small and 23 large case shot balls and the Schenkl combination fuse. The iron is fairly clean with only small amounts of rust. Where at Antietam this was recovered is not known.
