It had been considered that Confederate Arsenals, Laboratories, and Ordnance Depots would be the continuing Part Five (or Parts Five, Six and Seven) of Round Ball to Rimfire; however, although it does continue the history of Civil War small arms ammunition, it actually is more what it has been titled, a study of the 58 facilities that produced (with three exceptions) bullets and cartridges used by the Confederate armies. A handful of these were former Federal arsenals and had been in existence at the beginning of the war: Apalachicola, Augusta, Baton Rouge, Charleston, Fayetteville, Little Rock, Mount Vernon, and San Antonio. Some others were built and maintained by the southern states – to store and protect materiel in case of slave insurrections. But, the vast majority were constructed and/or outfitted from scratch at convenient places where supplies of raw materials and labor might be gathered together. As the war progressed and northern forces conquered more and more southern territory, a number of the initial Confederate ordnance works were forced to move to safer locations, for example: Baton Rouge to Columbus, GA; Briarfield to Selma; Charleston to Columbia; Galveston to Houston; Memphis to Grenada and Briarfield; Mount Vernon to Selma; Nashville to Atlanta; new Iberia to Shreveport; New Orleans to Jackson; and Savannah to Macon. Several of these transfers even found final homes elsewhere. Interestingly, as the Yankees threatened the Confederate capital in the spring and early summer of 1862, the Superintendent of Laboratories even recommended that the Richmond Arsenal be moved!
