The body of the kepi is in excellent condition. There is not a moth hole or nip on it. The front of the kepi has an embroidered bullion crossed cannons artillery insignia on a black felt backing surrounded by a border of dead bullion. This insignia is very well done and flawlessly sewn to the front of the kepi. The side buttons are two piece infantry “I” buttons. They anchor a thin leather chinstrap that is in good condition. Chinstrap is complete with both the leather slider and brass keeper. The visor is firmly stitched in place. The visor has a bound edge and has some light crazing.
The interior has an “ox-blood” colored sweatband. It shows signs of use but it is completely intact. The body of the kepi has a brown polished cotton linings that gathers at the top. The bottom of the crown is covered in leather and is faintly embossed with “J. L. TARBOX & CO. / ST. CHARLES HOTEL / NEW ORLEANS.”
Tarbox & Co. began business near the end of the war and is a known maker of military headgear. This is a very nice example of a late war kepi made in the South. [ad]
