This type example of the U.S. cavalry shell jacket was issued from the date of its adoption in 1855 to well into the early 1870’s. The specimen shown here was manufactured by government contract let out to Alvin Rose of New York City for 15,000 cavalry shell jackets dated between 2/8/1864-3/15/1864.
The shell jacket comes complete with all 20 of its original general service buttons intact as well as the complete wool taping. The outer wool shell of the coat has a number of moth hole repairs, which were done by the use of thread stitching them closed. These repairs are mostly located on the upper left chest and shoulder area. There is one notable 1 ½” seam separation located under the left armpit, while all other seams are intact. Internal coat lining is of a cream colored domet - wool flannel and cotton muslin used for the sleeve lining. The contractor’s stamp of A ROSE NY is located in both sleeves and what appears to be two faded (Brown colored) round dots in the right sleeve above the contractor’s stamp which would indicate the size 2. The main body construction is done mostly by machine stitching and lining applied by hand.
