Very nice set of cased brush epaulettes. They come in a “figure 8” tin japanned tin case with some scratches on all sides and heavy wear on the lid. The box is complete with the latch and carrying handle. Scratched into the front side of the lid is “C. HANTER [HUNTER?]” with what looks to be some other characters that are not readable. Inside the case is an old handwritten label which reads, “Lieut. C. Hunter / U.S.N.”. Cursory research did not reveal a naval officer with that name.

Both epaulettes are in good condition. The bodies are made of padded ribbed gold cloth outlined with alternating rows of bright and dead bullion. The “clam shells” are made of a combination of bullion wire and twisted bullion with an interior border of the same. On the end opposite the “clam-shell” each epaulette has a brass grommet and hole for attaching the epaulette to a post which would take a screw with a head in the shape of an eagle button.

Undersides of each epaulette is lined with blue cloth and black leather. The cloth shows some wear and stress separations.

From each “clam-shell” hangs bright twisted gold bullion tassels.

The overall condition is good.  [ad]
