76TH NEW YORK REUNION BADGE - 1907

Badge consists of a celluloid button with color artwork of a blue 5th Corps badge with a red 1st Corps badge superimposed over it at center, hanging from a bar that reads “76TH REGT. N.Y. INF’TY.”

Suspended from the button is a 1.75 x 2.25 inch white ribbon with gold lettering that reads “39TH ANNUAL REUNION 76TH REGT. N.Y. VET. ASS’N CORTLAND, N.Y. OCT. 10, 1907.”

Celluloid button is in nice condition with the original pin and makers label on back. Reverse of ribbon has the original paper maker’s label for The Whitehead & Hoag Co. The face of the ribbon has some surface dirt throughout and edge wear.

The 76th New York was organized at Albany, New York in January of 1862. They served with Pope’s Army of Virginia and were then assigned to the Army of the Potomac’s 1st Corps and later the 5th.

The regiment saw action from 2nd Bull Run to Appomattox. The regiment suffered heavily in several of the major engagements of the war. The heaviest loss was at the battle of the Wilderness where the regiment lost 270 men killed, wounded, captured and missing. They also suffered heavily at Gettysburg losing 202 men and at 2nd Manassas where they lost 126.

The regiment was mustered out on January 1, 1865.  [ad]
