Cane is constructed from a plain unvarnished piece of wood that meas. approx. 36.50 inches long x 1.25 inches wide at the top and tapering slightly toward the bottom. The body of the cane has much of the original bark on it though some has worn away. Approx. 80% of the bark remains. Cane is in excellent condition.
Near the handle is an area where the bark has been scrapped off and in period ink is written “CUT IN THE CENTER OF 7 PINES / BATTLE FIELD WHERE / 15000 SOLDIERS / WERE KILLED MAY 31ST + JUNE1ST / 1862. BATTLE FOUGHT BY LEE + MCCLELLAN.”
The battle of Seven Pines was part of the Peninsula Campaign and was fought between McClellan’s Army of the Potomac and Johnston’s, and then Lee’s, Army of Northern Virginia. Total casualties of killed, wounded and captured were approx. 11,156 out of a total of approx. 73,000 engaged. [AD]
