Organized in 1862, the Union Third Corps performed well during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign and the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.  Gen. Dan Sickles became its commander in the spring of 1863, and a controversial commander he would be. Especially at Gettysburg, where, on his own volition he moved his position on the Union left out toward the Emmitsburg road, leaving himself isolated and the Union left flank on Little Round Top up in the air. Bearing the brunt of Longstreet’s late afternoon, July 2nd attack, Sickles Corps would lose 40 percent of its fighting strength, along with 17 out of 37 regimental commanders, and General Sickles himself, who would lose a leg. In battered condition, the 3rd Corps remained intact through of Bristoe Station and Mine run Campaigns later that fall, but would see itself amalgamated and its divisions spread among the 5th and 2nd Corps in the spring of 1864. To the immense chagrin of 3rd Corps veterans, who cherished their corps badge above all others to the end, and into the post-war GAR period.

Superb Corps badge collectible w/Gettysburg connotations. The 1st Third Corps Division was Birney’s which was positioned July 2nd on the Peach Orchard. In circular plastic case, 1.375” diameter, w/black foam padding.   [JP]
