Badge is done in the shape of a rosette of red white and blue ribbon. The three ribbons come together at the top to form a bow which is held by a stamped brass crossed cannon insignia flanked by two US flags.

The split tail of the rosette is made up of a red ribbon approx. 5.00 inches long with gold lettering that reads “12TH ANNUAL REUNION 1ST C.V.H. ARTY.” The other arm of the tail is a 5.00 inches long blue ribbon with gold lettering that reads “MERIDEN JUNE14TH 1899.”

Reverse has the original pin and paper label that reads “T. F. SHERMAN, JEWELER AND BADGE MAKER, 175 MEADOW ST., NEW HAVEN, CONN. RIBBON, METALS AND CELLULOID BADGES.”

Item is in excellent condition with ribbon colors bright and legible print.

The 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery began life as the 4th Connecticut Infantry in May of 1861 but was changed to heavy artillery in January of 1862. Early in the war parts of the regiment served in the defenses of Washington while others served on the Peninsula at Yorktown, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill. In all the regiment was in 114 battles and skirmishes including Mine Run, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. At Petersburg the regiment became well-known for operating the famous heavy mortar called “The Dictator.”

During its service the regiment lost 6 officers and 221 men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded.  [AD]
