Red ribbon approx. 2.25 inches wide x 6.50 inches long with gold lettering that reads “WELCOME 8TH REUNION OF THE 14TH N.J. VOLUNTEERS PLAINFIELD, N.J. OCT. 19TH 1886-RECEPTION BY WINFIELD SCOTT POST NO. 73 G.A.R. DEP’T OF N.J.” Ribbon is decorated with a 6th Corps badge on the bottom third.
Reverse has the original paper label for “THE CONSTITUTIONALIST, PLAINFIELD, N.J.”
Ribbon is in overall good condition with a bit of fraying on the top edge. All gold print is legible.
The 14th New Jersey was organized in Freehold in August of 1862 and served in the 8th Corps as wells as the 3rd and 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. They saw action at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Winchester, Fishers Hill, Cedar Creek and Petersburg.
During their service they lost 8 officers and 249 men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded but survived. [AD]
