The ribbon has a plain brass rectangular brass top bar that holds a pair of stamped brass crossed rifles with the original pin on the reverse.

The red ribbon itself meas. approx. 2.50 x 7.00 inches long with a faint 1st Corps badge at center surrounded by “88TH REGT. PENNA. VOLS. 1861-1865.” The bottom edge of the ribbon has a row of gold bullion tassels.

The overall condition of the item is good.

The 88th Pennsylvania was organized in September of 1861. They served in the Army of the Potomac from October of 1861 to March of 1862 when they were shifted to the defenses of Washington and the Department of the Rappahannock. In June of 1862 they joined the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and in September of that same year joined the 1st Corps where they remained until that organization’s consolidation with the 5th Corps in early 1864.

The 88th saw action in 42 engagements to include 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks. The regiment suffered 181 deaths by battle, wounds and disease plus many others wounded but survived.    [ad]
