ID’D CONFEDERATE REUNION RIBBON FOR COMPANY A, 24TH VIRGINIA

This reunion ribbon came from the estate of Captain C. M. Stigleman who was a prominent Doctor in Floyd County, Virginia and who raised the Company for Confederate service.

The white ribbon meas. approx. 8.75 x 1.75 inches with black block lettering that reads “CO. A, 24th VA.”

Ribbon is in excellent condition with no separations and very little surface dirt.

With the ribbon is a xerox copy of a receipt of payment by Dr. Stigleman to the 1st Sergeant of Company A for July and August 1861. The Xerox is provided to prove the ribbon’s connection to Dr. Stigleman’s estate.

Dr. Callohill M. Stigleman was born in Floyd County, Virginia March 24, 1833.

A published obituary for Dr. Stigleman reads in part:

“Dr. Stigleman was born and raised in this county (Floyd County); graduated at the Medical College of Virginia and afterwards took a post graduate course in New York and commenced the practice of medicine in this county in 1857… He organized and took to the Confederate service the first Company from this county, which was incorporated into the famous Twenty-fourth Virginia Regiment as Company A, commanded by General Jubal A. Early, as its first Colonel.

He served with his command with credit and distinction during the principal battle of the first year of the war, and then resigned to resume his practice.”

Dr. Stigleman died in Floyd County, Virginia on January 29, 1905 and is buried there in Jacksonville, Cemetery.

The 24th Virginia served through many battles during the war with Kemper’s Brigade, Pickett’s Division of Longstreet’s Corps and took part in the famous charge at Gettysburg.  [ad]
