Badge is surmounted by a large spread-winged eagle over crossed cannons and artillery shells. Reverse has the original pin. Suspended from this top piece is a gold silk ribbon approx. 5.00 inches long.

The top bar has several drops. The first is of brass and is very colorful with a full color US flag above a laurel wreath with a red, white and blue “GAR.” Across the bottom of the drop is riband with “REPRESENTATIVE” in black enamel.

The second drop is of white metal and shows a scene of the Boston State House with Augustus Saint- Gaudens monument to the 54^th Massachusetts at center and a riband at bottom that reads “OLD STATE HOUSE CRADDLE OF LIBERTY BOSTON 1917.”

The final drop is a bronze circular disc with a bust of William J. Patterson, Commander –in-Chief of the GAR. During the war Patterson served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 62^nd Pennsylvania and was wounded and captured at Gaines Mill, exchanged, was wounded at Antietam and Fredericksburg. Reverse of the drop has “51^ST NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT GAR AUG. 1917 BOSTON, MASS.”

Ribbon has some stress separations and light surface dirt but the rest is excellent.  [ad]
