This Union veteran’s slouch hat is in nice condition. It is made of felt, black in color, with the stamped brass “GAR” wreath pin still in place. Original gold and black hat cord with acorn ends remains at the base of the crown, as well as a wide black grosgrain ribbon. Thin black grosgrain ribbon surrounds the underside of the brim.
Maker’s name, “LAKEWOOD”, is embossed in the leather sweatband. Also on sweatband is a label for the distributor who sold the hat, Middleboro Clothing Co. of Middleboro, Massachusetts.
Hat measures 11 ½” wide by 13” long by 4 ½” high. Stitching is tight except for two areas at the front of underside of the brim, approximately 3” and 3 ½” long. Grosgrain ribbon shows light fraying and splitting. Leather sweatband shows three pin holes. Hat retains a nice shape. Hat is stored in a vintage Sax Fifth Avenue hat box. [SL]
