A very pretty three-piece G.A.R. badge by Irons of Providence, R.I. This gilt brass badge is elaborately worked scrolling borders with rickrack designs and black enamel on the top two portions and blue enamel on the larger drop. The top portion is a pin-back with the maker’s name on the reverse. The front reads “G.A.R.” and “R.I.” in gold on black and “Department” in an arc between in black on gold. A small shield-shaped drop between the suspension chains, with worked border and scroll interior designs, reads, “POST / 1.” The large drop is the state seal of an anchor on blue background at center with scrolling floral borders and a banderole at top with “HOPE” in blue on the gilt background.

Post 1 was the Prescott Post in Providence, named after Lt. Henry Prescott, 1^st Rhode Island, killed at First Bull Run 21 July 1861. The post was organized very soon after the war and chartered in 1867, before the Department of Rhode Island itself was chartered in 1868. The Grand Army of the Republic was, of course, the largest organization of Union veterans and very influential in issues of veterans’ rights and politics in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

This is a very pretty badge in excellent condition.  [sr]
