This small souvenir canteen was given out at an 1887 GAR convention. The canteen meas. approx. 2.25 inches across, has both the sling loops and the cork stopper as well as the little chain for suspending it. The body is covered on both sides with a red wool cover. One side is blank while the other is marked “WE DRANK FROM THE SAME CANTEEN 1861-1866” and then “PATENTED 1887.” The side with the printing has a blank disc at center which at one time held either a photo or some kind of printed insignia. The item is in good condition but the red cover has numerous moth nips on the back and a few on the front as well as moderate surface dirt.
