Item Code: 172-3374

Very nice full color memorial typical of those found to commemorate US units that served in World War One. This one has a white scroll across the top with “WORLD WAR” in heavy black lettering. Beneath it is a smoke shrouded scene of an American machine gun in action while the right corner has a large full-color American flag and a full-color rendition of Columbia wearing an oak wreath Liberty cap seated on a golden thrown. Next to Columbia is a large spread-winged eagle perched on a US shield all done in full-color. The bottom center has a white panel with black lettering listing the officer’s and men in the unit listed. This panel is flanked by the flags of the Allied nations and the different branch insignia of the United States Army.

This particular memorial is for Company G of the 109th US Infantry which was a Pennsylvania National Guard regiment and served with the 28th Infantry Division in France. As part of the 28th Division the 109th arrived in France in May of 1918. In July the division was put into line near Chateau-Thierry where they saw heavy action in the towns of Fismes and Fismette along the Vesle River. Later they took part in the American Offensive in the Muse-Argonne.

This roster has no printing date but it was probably produced while the Company was training in Georgia before going overseas. Men later killed in action do appear on the memorial which helps date the item to before the Company sailed for France.

Framed the piece meas. approx. 17.00 x 21.00 inches. The colors are good as is the overall condition of the paper. The frame is wood painted white which has yellowed some over the years and has minor chipping. Frame appears to be the original.
