FRAMED 1880’S GERMAN SOLDIER “SERVICE REMINDER”

Item Code: M23316

This colorful pre-printed document was produced in Berlin and commemorates the service of a soldier in the 7th Company of the East Prussian Regiment #44.

Across the top of the document is an arch supported by two columns. The arch is made up of laurel leaves, shields and three medallions at center. The middle medallion houses a portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm I who reigned from 1867 to 1888. To the left is a portrait believed to be Wilhelm II of Wurttemberg which is flanked by his coat of arms and those of Oldenberg. To the right is another King, as yet unidentified, along with his crests. Above each of the portraits are crowns and above all is a sunburst.

The columns that support the arch are decorated with flags and military paraphernalia at the top while near the bottom each has three soldiers standing on the column pedestal. Each pedestal has a plaque at bottom. The one on the left reads “TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER” while the one on the right reads “WITH GOD FOR KING AND FATHERLAND.” At the base of the left pillar is a shield with the German National colors while the one at right has the Prussian colors.

Across the very bottom of the document are several more shields along with cannons and flags. There is a riband draped across the bottom that reads “A REMINDER OF MY SERVICE.” At very bottom is the soldier’s name and regiment.

Printed at center under the arch is a pastoral scene with a castle and village with a large hill rising in the distance. In the foreground are three soldiers wearing the pre-World War One blue field uniform. All three soldiers have a face that has been cut from a photograph and glued to the soldier’s body. These are no doubt photos of the soldier whose name appears at bottom. The face on the soldier at far left has come loose and fallen to the bottom of the frame and can easily be put back in place.

The document is housed in its original frame and meas. approx. 22.00 x 18.25 inches. Frame has a black and gold border with some minor chipping. The document itself does have a water stain at top center running into the middle section but it is not severe. Despite its age the document colors are still very good.

Reverse of the item has some German writing in period ink but it is smudged and would take some effort to decipher.  [ad]
