The M4 bayonet was introduced in 1944 for use with the M1 carbine. The M4 bayonet, like the M3 fighting knife that preceded it, was designed for rapid production. This one was made by the Utica Cutlery Company.
This has a relatively narrow 6 ¾” spear-point blade with a sharpened 3.5-inch secondary edge. The blade is made of carbon steel. The grooved leather handle is formed of stacked leather washers that were shaped by turning on a lathe. The steel cross guard has a bayonet muzzle ring and is stamped “USM4 / UTICA”. The fastener is on the pommel and operates perfectly.
The M8A1 scabbard manufactured later in WW II has the M1910 bent wire hook. The scabbard throat flange is stamped "US M8A1 / B M CO".
Overall condition is excellent. [jet]
