RARE 4.2-INCH, 30-POUND PARROTT RIFLE CANISTER ROUND

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2024-30

This canister round is complete, with tinned iron body nailed to its original wood sabot, filled with iron balls, and closed off by bending over tabs cut along the top edge of the cylinder to hold the iron top plate. The wood sabot is grooved secure the powder bag holding the propellant charge, and shows good, natural color with just a few stains and small chips. All the nails securing the tin to it are present but one. The soldered vertical seam is very good. There are not rust holes. Most of the tin surface is present, showing about 40-50% bright and the rest gray, with a few spots where it was worn off by handling or abrasion, exposing the underlying iron that now shows as a thin light or dark brown. The iron plate on the top shows some shallow corrosion and some of the bent over tabs are gone, but everything is in place and the piece is solid, able to be handled, and displays well.

Parrott guns are easily recognized by their reinforced breeches. There were army and navy versions of the 30-pound Parrott and the army version is generally classed as a rifled siege gun, but they show up in the field not only in siege situations like Fort Pulaski, Vicksburg, Petersburg and Charleston, but occasionally in field engagements, like First Manassas and Fredericksburg, though perhaps in fairly static roles. As a gun that might also be placed in defensive works, a canister round was fully appropriate. Charts indicate the contents are 48 iron balls, 1.3 inches in diameter. This is a very good example of a scarce artillery round. [sr][ ph:L]
