Signed commission of John T. Ensminger to 2nd Lieutenant for the 127th Pennsylvania Infantry Company A on July 25, 1862.  Ensminger initially enlisted into the Federal army on May 2 ,1861 from Dauphin County, Pennsylvania to the 25th Pennsylvania Infantry.  The 25th was detailed for 3 months service and primarily responsible for defending D.C, and was later moved to Harpers Ferry in the summer of 1861.  Ensminger received his promotion with the 127th Pennsylvania that was detailed to 6 months of service. Their responsibility was, also, to guard D.C and were later engaged at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.  As 2nd Lieutenant, he mustered out of service with the 127th Pennsylvania on May 8, 1863 and recommissioned into Company G, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry on June 24, 1865.  The company’s foremost duty was to guard Manassas Gap.

Post-war, Ensminger continued his service with Harrisburg’s 1st City Zouaves Militia as 2nd Lieutenant.  He married Sarah Fought on December 25, 1866.  She succumbed to illness and passed away on August 7, 1870, and he remarried Nancy Charles on December 30, 1872.  He was a member of GAR Simmon’s Post no. 116 of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Ensminger died on May 26, 1924 at the age of 82 and is buried in Harrisburg Cemetery.

Signed at upper left by Governor Andrew Curtin - "A G. Curtin", and at lower right by Samuel R. Thomas, Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Commission is in good condition, matted behind glass in a wooden frame measuring 21 3/8” x 17 ½”.  The commission paper is 17” x 13 ¼”.  There are faint fold lines indicating it was once folded for storage.  The outer edges and centerfold have light foxing.  The top center has a slight tear as well as the center of the document.  An original bright red seal is displayed with the document, and on the opposite side is a faint outline of the seal.  On reverse, the mat board is held in place with 8 metal tabs and a typed description of the commission is taped to the matting.  [mc] [ph:L]
