Frederick Grannis, the officer for whom Caldwell was requesting a command promotion, was a 2nd lieutenant at the time this letter was sent. He received one more promotion, to First Lieutenant and 61st NY regimental Adjutant in October 1862, and was discharged on 2/26/1864. Edward Dennison Morgan served as Governor of New York from 1859-1862, and was later U.S. Senator and longtime Republican Party chairman.
