Here is an example of a US 1798 Contract Socket Bayonet. As is typical of most of these bayonets, delivered in conjunction with the US 1798 contract muskets. As is typical of 1798 socket bayonets from the middle of the first decade of the 19th century through the end of their production, the socket included a rudimentary bridge. The bayonet is cut for a top stud.
The bayonet measures approximately 19.25” long overall with a 15” blade and a 3.5” socket. A thin top flute is 7.25” long. Semi-bright metal overall with scattered dark spotting. Stamped on flat of the blade is “JW.US” where the lower portion of stamping is worn. There is a T-mortise on the socket.
This would be a very fine addition to any display of US 1798 Contract Muskets or War of 1812 era weapons. [jet] [ph:L]
