The blade meas. approx. 25.50 inches long. It has an unstopped fuller that runs approx. 19.00 inches long. The blade is in very nice clean condition with a surface that is bright with very light mottling near the point. The true edge has one small nick. The obverse ricasso is marked with “1862.” The first two digits are faint but the last two are strong. The maker’s mark is in four lines and reads “MADE BY AMES MFG CO. CHICOPEE, MASS.”

The grip is covered in black leather but there is no wire wrap. Leather surface shows very little wear. The brass basket and counterguard are very good with a nice mellow patina. Front of the guard is stamped “5M” over “604.”

The leather scabbard is in excellent condition. It has virtually no surface finish loss. It is strong, clean and supple with all the copper rivets running down one side. Brass stud for frog is also present. Throat of the scabbard is stamped “21 M” over “768.”    [ad][ph:L]
