Excellent-plus condition with 90 percent or better original finish, including on the hammer, strong blue and vivid case colors. Excellent, sharply checkered hard rubber grips with the rampant colt at top on either side. Shorter 3 7/8 inch barrel with ejector. All markings crisp: “COLT D.A. 38” on the left barrel near the frame and correct two-line barrel address on top, “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFGT. Co. / HARTFORD.CT. U.S.A. The left frame bears the correct three-line patent markings deeply stamped, “PAT. SEPT 19. 1871. / “ “ 5.”79 / “ JAN.19.”75” with the rampant colt logo in a circle just to its rear.  Production from 1877 to 1909 ran to almost 167,000. All matching serial number serial number 121658, dating it to 1900.  Action functions well.

These were Colt’s first double-action revolver and combine a robust barrel, frame and cylinder like the army revolver with a more modern, stylish bird’s head grip. They were popular pistols. The nickname “Lightning,” applied to these .38 caliber versions, needs no explanation. Billy the Kid was carrying a Model 1877 when he was killed by Pat Garrett. This is a superior example.  [sr] [ph:m]
