Model 1841 Cadet Musket was produced at Springfield Armory between 1844 and 1845.  This is one of only 450 of these weapons produced. Intended for the Corps of Cadets at West Point.

This is a .57 caliber smoothbore musket with a 40” round, smoothbore barrel. The bore is clear with minor pitting. No rear sight at breech; blade sight atop barrel band at muzzle. Barrel is a nice even color with overall moderate pitting that transitions to heavier pitting around the breech. There is no viewer’s proof or eagle head visible due to pitting. The heavy pitting continues onto the hammer and lock plate. The pitting on the lock plate obscures the eagle in front of the hammer but the “US” remains visible. “SPRING / FIELD / 1844” is stamped behind the hammer and very readable amid the pitting. Mechanics are good. Butt plate is likewise pitted. Other metal parts: barrel bands, trigger guard, swivels and band springs are present and in good condition with less pitting.  Ramrod is not original to musket but is perfect fit. It bears English proof marks at the small trumpet-shaped head.

The walnut stock exhibits an attractive original color and finish. The wood shows very few of the usual dings and dents but does have a repaired break at the wrist. The break ran from the lock plate back to the comb and around to one of the lock plate screws on the left side. Repair was very well done and stock is now strong and stable.

This is a good example of the extremely rare Model 1841 smoothbore cadet musket.   [jet][ph:L]
