Excavated “short pattern” Nesler bullets recovered from Herr Ridge, on the west side of Gettysburg. Herr Ridge was key in the first day’s fight on July 1, 1863. Several Confederate attacks were launched from there and it was the perfect platform for Southern artillery. General Heth’s units camped there following the fighting that day.

This .69 caliber bullet for smoothbore muskets was made in Raleigh, NC, at the North Carolina Institute for the Deaf, Dumb, and the Blind specifically for North Carolina troops.

Bullets in fine dropped condition with white patina; one has light “plow nick” on base. “HR” marked on bottom.

Recovered by author/publisher Dean S. Thomas.  [jet] [PH:L]
